If you want to order a bra online, knowing your exact size could save you a lot of frustration. In most cases, all you need is a soft tape measure to take the right measurements on your own, feed them into our calculator, and hit calculate.

Experts advise on wearing a shelf bra when taking bra measurements, and so do we!

Ensure that you are wearing a soft no-lift no underwire bra without padding before taking the measurements. This is a good idea if your breasts have a slight sag.

You will need to measure:

Bust Size (Loose Circumference)

This is the circumference around the chest over the fullest section of your boobs. You should stand with your hands straight on your side and ensure you are wearing a comfortably fitting bra. (ideally a non-padded non-pushup bra)

Band Size (Firm Circumference)

This will be the circumference directly beneath the breasts. This is where the bra’s band sits. Don’t pull the tape measure too firm. You can measure this without wearing a bra.

Here is a quick guide to taking the necessary measurements

  1. Under Arms and Above the Bust

Run a tape measure around your body just above your bust. Ensure that it runs under your arms and straight across your back. Make it tout but not tight such that it squeezes. Ensure that you breathe out and relax your shoulders. If you get an odd number, round up to the next even number. For instance, 29 becomes 30.

  1. Fullest Part of the Bust

Sit down before taking the measurements as the chest expands when you sit. Run the tape around the fullest part of the boobs. (this isn’t necessarily over the nipples). Once again, the tape should be straight across the back, taught but not tight enough to squeeze.

  1. Beneath the Breasts

Run the tape measure firmly around your body and beneath the arms. Ensure that it crosses the ribcage immediately below the breasts. Lift your boobs if you have to.

Always remember that bra fitting isn’t science. It is hard to get the perfect fit by just crunching numbers. If you can’t get fitted by a professional, buy from someone who allows returns. Moreover, bra sizing changes depending on manufacturer, at times, so you should consult before making the final decision.
